I have it when I can give it away

An idea can feel complete while nobody else has asked it a question.

  • conversation

I have excellent ideas when nobody is asking questions.

In my head the whole thing is clear. I can see how the parts connect. I may even give myself a small, private nod. Then I try to explain it and discover that the middle was mostly confidence.

The idea was not necessarily bad. It was protected. Nothing outside it had been allowed to push back yet.

I keep returning to a sentence: I have an idea only to the extent that I can give it away. I am still working out what I mean by it.

01 / Explain

Say it out loud

Explanation is the first test. I have to choose an order, replace the convenient fog with words, and decide which details actually matter.

Sometimes the sentence stops halfway because I finally hear the gap. Sometimes the person listening asks one ordinary question and a complicated part of the idea disappears.

That can feel like losing something. More often I had confused size with substance. The smaller version is the first one another person can actually hold.

An idea becomes clearer when it has to leave the conditions that protected it.

02 / Receive

It arrives somewhere else

The other person does not receive the idea exactly as I sent it. They bring different work, memories, interests, and misunderstandings.

They may notice the useful part and ignore the part I was proud of. They may connect it to something I have never seen. They may simply disagree.

I do not have to pretend every change improves the idea. Authorship still matters. Some readings miss the point. Some feedback is just another person's preference wearing a serious hat.

But if the idea can only remain itself while nobody else touches it, I probably have a private object, not yet a shared thought.

03 / Give

Giving and having more

Chapter 81 of the Daodejing ends with a surprising movement: the sage gives to others and has more, benefits others and is not diminished.

I am careful with that line because it is easy to turn generosity into a clever way of collecting returns. Give knowledge, gain status. Share an idea, wait for applause. That is still accumulation with a nicer story.

My smaller reading is about understanding. When I can explain an idea clearly enough for somebody else to use, question, or change, I have more of it than when it was only a feeling in my head.

The other person may have more too. That is possible, not guaranteed.

04 / Draft

Still testing the sentence

This note is now outside my head.

You may understand the sentence differently. You may find a hole in it. It may turn out to be smaller than I thought.

I have it when I can give it away.

For now, publishing it is part of finding out.
